There are two kinds of applicants. 1 music school students who want to take college courses. 2. college students who want to take music classes in conservatory. George Li is in first group. People in that group will take music as career. My son is in second one. He chooses computer science as his major. He has been playing piano for 12 years and still wants to keep playing in the future (only for fun),  Both joint programs (Harvard+NEC, Columbia+Juilliar) are fantastic. But for me, i would like him to be in Columbia+Juilliard because in the first three years, he will focus on Columbia‘s work. He only needs to take piano lesson once a week. In 4th, 5th years, he needs to spend more time in Juilliard. In this way, he may handle work and manage time better.

Usually music students don’t need SAT, ACT in order to get in music school. I don’t know whether SAT/ACT are required for them to get in the joint program. But i think lower SAT/ACT are still acceptable. For science and engineering students, SAT/ACT are in the requirements. Fortunately, my son’s SATII/ACT are almost full (800s, 35/36) so getting in science and engineering school shouldn’t be a problem. You have to apply for both schools separately. Even though you are accepted by both schools, It is not guaranteed to be in the program. Every year, only 4-5 students are selected, for all instruments.

For next chapter, i will tell you his piano story. It is an interesting experience.
